Geek Therapy at Positive Regard Therapy
At Positive Regard Therapy (PRT), we celebrate the power of storytelling, creativity, and fandom in mental health. Our therapists, Bert Fox and Sam Milstone, bring their passion for geek culture into the therapy room, incorporating awareness of and playing of Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TTRPGs), pop culture references, and interactive workshops to support healing and growth.
What is Geek Therapy?
Geek therapy is an approach that integrates elements of gaming, comics, science fiction, fantasy, and pop culture into the therapeutic process. It recognizes the emotional connections people form with their favorite stories, characters, and gaming experiences, using them as tools for self-exploration, personal development, and building social skills.
This method is particularly effective for neurodivergent individuals, LGBTQ+ clients, creatives, and those who find traditional talk therapy limiting or inaccessible. By tapping into the worlds that clients love, we create a therapy experience that feels engaging, immersive, and meaningful.
How We Incorporate Geek Therapy at PRT
TTRPG-Informed Therapy
TTRPG’s like Dungeons & Dragons offer unique opportunities for clients to explore identity, develop problem-solving skills, and navigate social interactions in a safe, controlled environment. Through roleplay and discussion of various campaigns and settings, clients can experiment with different ways of thinking, build confidence and process emotions.
Bert & Sam use TTRPG-inspired techniques both in one-on-one sessions and group settings, helping clients tap into storytelling as a form of therapeutic exploration.
Fandom & Story-Based Therapy
Many people find deep meaning in movies, TV shows, comics, and video games. Whether it’s discussing the themes of a favorite show, drawing parallels between a character’s journey and personal struggles, or exploring self-identity through fandom, we integrate pop culture as a powerful therapeutic tool.
Workshops & Groups
We offer specialized workshops and groups that incorporate geek culture into therapy. These may include:
TTRPG groups facilitated by PRT staff that focus on social skills, emotional regulation, and confidence-building.
Creative storytelling workshops where participants explore personal narratives through world-building and character creation.
Geek-friendly support groups providing a welcoming space for neurodivergent individuals, LGBTQ+ clients, and others who connect with geek culture.
Who is Geek Therapy For?
Geek therapy can benefit anyone but is especially helpful for:
Neurodivergent individuals (Autistic, ADHD, etc.)
LGBTQ+ clients exploring identity in affirming spaces
Creatives, writers, and artists seeking new ways to express themselves
Those struggling with anxiety, depression or social challenges
Anyone who feels more comfortable engaging with therapy through the lens of their favorite fandoms
